<p>Lee Andrew Feinstein (born 1959) is a former official at the Departments of State and Defense, and has held senior positions on Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaigns. He served as the United States ambassador to Poland from 2009 to 2012. Feinstein is currently the dean at Indiana University's School of Global and International Studies, as well as a Senior Advisor at McLarty Associates.</p>

<p>Born to a Jewish family, Feinstein graduated from Georgetown University Law Center, from which he holds a J.D. He also holds a Master of Arts in political science from the City University of New York, and an A.B. from Vassar College.</p>

<p>Feinstein was Assistant Director for Research at the Arms Control Association in Washington from 1989 to 1994 before becoming Special Assistant for Peacekeeping and Peace Enforcement Policy at the Department of Defense. In 1995, Feinstein became Principal Deputy Director and Member of the Policy Planning Staff at the Department of State, a role he served in through 2001. Feinstein joined the Carnegie Endowment's Non-Proliferation Project as a visiting scholar in April 2001. From 2002 to 2007, Feinstein served as Deputy Director of Studies and Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations; during his time there, Feinstein also served as an advisor to the congressionally mandated Task Force on the United Nations, chaired by former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former Senator George J. Mitchell. From 2007 to 2008, Feinstein was national security director for the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, and later served as a foreign policy advisor to the Barack Obama campaign. From 2008 to 2009, Feinstein served as a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. From 2009 to 2012, Feinstein served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Poland. Feinstein is a member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council and currently chairs the Committee on Conscience.</p>

<p>Feinstein is admitted to the bars of New York and Washington, D.C. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of The Kosciuszko Foundation in New York, National Advisory Board of the Center for the National Interest, and the International Advisory Board of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Center.</p>

<p>On July 17, 2009, President Obama announced that he intended to nominate Feinstein as Ambassador to Poland. Feinstein's appointment was notable in that he was considered a Clinton loyalist, and a Foreign Policy blog had previously speculated that the post would go to Obama advisor Mark Brzezinski. Feinstein was formally nominated on July 20, 2009 and was confirmed by the Senate on September 22, 2009 by unanimous consent. On October 20, 2009, Ambassador Feinstein presented his credentials to the President of Poland, Lech Kaczyński.</p>

<p>During his tenure, Feinstein signed an agreement to establish a U.S. Air Force Aviation Detachment in Poland, the first permanent presence of U.S. forces in the country. He also signed an agreement, witnessed by Secretary Clinton, to establish missile defenses in Poland. Feinstein was also involved in efforts to develop energy resources in central Europe.</p>

<p>Feinstein served as ambassador in Poland from October 2009 to October 2012, announcing in July 2012, that he would be retiring from his position. The embassy announced that Stephen D. Mull would be his replacement/</p>

<p>From 2013 to 2014, Feinstein was Senior Director at McLarty Associates; he currently serves as a Senior Advisor at the firm. Feinstein was named the founding dean of Indiana University's School of Global and International Studies in 2014, a post he currently holds.</p>

<p>Ambassador Feinstein is currently the Dean of the Indiana University at Bloomington’s School of Global and International Studies. He also serves as a Senior Transatlantic Fellow at German Marshall Fund of the United States, where he works on a range of issues related to transatlantic security, energy, democracy promotion, and economic relations.</p>

<p>Previously, Ambassador Feinstein served as National Security Director to then-Senator Hillary Clinton during her presidential campaign and later as a Senior Foreign Policy Advisor for the campaign of President Barack Obama. He served on Obama’s Presidential Transition Team and as Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Clinton. In the Clinton Administration, Ambassador Feinstein was also Principal Deputy Director of Policy Planning under Secretary Madeleine Albright and a Special Assistant in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Strategy and Requirements in the Pentagon.</p>

<p>Ambassador Feinstein is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He serves on the National Advisory Council of the Center for the National Interest, the International Advisory Board of the Jewish Joint Distribution Center of New York City, and is a Trustee of the Kosciuszko Foundation in New York. He is the author of "Means to an End: U.S. Interest and the International Criminal Court" (Brookings, 2009) with Tod Lindberg of the Hoover Institution. An international lawyer, Feinstein is an authority on "The Responsibility to Protect" and authored the Council on Foreign Relations report “Darfur and Beyond: What Is Needed to Prevent Mass Atrocities,” which was featured in the Emmy Award-winning multimedia council project "Crisis Guide-Darfur." Feinstein is the author of numerous articles, book chapters and op-eds, and he is a frequent commentator for the national and international media.</p>
