Grace Nicholson; December 31, 1877 - August 31, 1948. Grace Nicholson took many photographs as she traveled throughout northwest California to buy Indian objects for her store in Pasadena, California. This visual legacy includes hundreds of photographs of Karuk, Hupa and Yurok people.

Grace Nicholson; December 31, 1877 - August 31, 1948. Grace Nicholson grew up in Philadelphia and moved to Pasadena, California as a young woman. She was a business woman who sold Indian baskets and other objects in her store . She also kept ethnographic notes and took photographs of the people she bought objects from in northwest California and other states in the west.

Grace Nicholson sold part of her collection of objects to the Museum of the American Indian in New York City. These objects were later transferred to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian. In 2010 the museum repatriated 219 ceremonial items from this collection to the Yurok.

Hundreds of sacred items returned to tribe. Yurok Today (October 2010), pp. 5-6.
