Gayatri Spivak, in full Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, (born Feb. 24, 1942, Calcutta, India), Indian literary theorist, feminist critic, postcolonial theorist, and professor of comparative literature noted for her personal brand of deconstructive criticism, which she called “interventionist.”

ayatri Chakravorty Spivak (born 24 February 1942) is an Indian scholar, literary theorist, and feminist critic.[1] She is a University Professor at the Columbia University and a founding member of the establishment's Institute for Comparative Literature and Society.[2]

Considered one of the most influential postcolonial intellectuals, Spivak is best known for her essay "Can the Subaltern Speak?" and for her translation of and introduction to Jacques Derrida's De la grammatologie.[3][4] She also translated such works of Mahasweta Devi as Imaginary Maps and Breast Stories into English and with separate critical appreciation on the texts and Devi's life and writing style in general.
