Gray, Eileen, 1878-1976
Eileen Gray (born Kathleen Eileen Moray Smith; 9 August 1878 – 31 October 1976); born near Enniscorthy, in County Wexford, Ireland; Gray's mother, Eveleen Pounden, was a granddaughter of Francis Stuart, 10th Earl of Moray; Gray's serious art education began in 1900 at the Slade School in London, Gray's teachers at Slade included Philip Wilson Steer, Henry Tonks and Frederick Brown; studied lacquering with Dean Charles; in Paris Gray began training with Seizo Sugawara, In 1910, Gray opened a lacquer workshop with Sugawara; Irish architect and furniture designer and a pioneer of the Modern Movement in architecture
