Obregón, Álvaro, 1880-1928
Álvaro Obregón Salido; February 19, 1880,Siquisiva, Navojoa, Sonora – July 17, 1928, Mexico City, Mexico; worked on family farm as child; married Refugio Urrea, 1903; became a successful chickpea farmer and inventor; Obregón entered politics in 1911 with his election as municipal president of the town of Huatabampo; In 1912, join the local Maderista forces, the Fourth Irregular Battalion of Sonora, organized under the command of General Sanginés to oppose Pascual Orozco's revolt; rose up the ranks of the Sonoran military and was appointed chief of Sonora's War Department in 1913; by 1913 he entire area of Northwestern Mexico under Obregón's command; signed trearties in 1914 to end the Huerta regime; Obregón's forces easily defeated Zapatista forces at Puebla in early 1915; Carranza appointed Obregón as Minister of War in his new cabinet; elected president of Mexicco, 1920-1924; assisnated in 1928 right before assuming another term as president
