Florence Beatrice Price; April 9, 1887, Little Rock, AK – June 3, 1953, Chicago, IL; parents were interacial couple but well respected; first piano performance at the age of four and went on to have her first composition published at the age of 11; graduated from Capitol High School at age 14 as valedictorian; enrolled in the New England Conservatory of Music with a major in piano and organ, studied with George Chadwick and Frederick Converse, graduated in 1906 with honors; head of Clark Atlanta University's music department, 1910; married Thomas J. Price, 1912, divorced in 1931; moved to Chicago as part of Great Migration; She studied composition, orchestration, and organ with the leading teachers in the city including Arthur Olaf Andersen, Carl Busch, Wesley La Violette, and Leo Sowerby; continued to write music compositions; lived with friend Margaret Bonds and met Langston Hughes and Marian Anderson; Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Frederick Stock, premiered the Symphony in E minor on June 15, 1933, making it the first composition by an African-American woman to be played by a major orchestra;
