Sprague, Rosetta Douglass, 1839-1906
RosettaDouglass; b. June 24, 1839, New Bedford, MA; daughter of Anna Murray-Douglass and Frederick Douglass; moved to Lynn, Massachusetts at age 5; at age six, she stayed with Abigail and Lydia Mott, from Albany, New York and learned to read, write, and sew; assisted her father in making and packaging his newspaper; married Nathan Sprague, Dec. 24, 1863; had seven children (including Fredericka Douglass Sprague Perry); admitted into the Seward Seminary in Rochester, New York, 1848 and segregated from the white students; worked as a teacher and eventually became primarily a homemaker and wife; wrote the paper My Mother as I Recall Her in 1900; worked along with her father, and had a keen sense of social justice issues; become a founding member of the National Association for Colored Women
