Kalākaua, born David Laʻamea Kamananakapu Mahinulani Naloiaehuokalani Lumialani Kalākaua, sometimes called The Merrie Monarch; November 16, 1836, Honolulu, Kingdom of Hawai'i – January 20, 1891, San Francisco, California; parents Caesar Kaluaiku Kapaʻakea and Analea Keohokālole; family were considered collateral relations of the reigning House of Kamehameha; studied law under Charles Coffin Harris in 1853; married Kapiʻolani, December 8, 1863, no children; received his earliest military training under the Prussian officer, Major Francis Funk; in the army, Kalākaua served as first lieutenant in his father Kapaʻakea's militia of 240 men and later worked as military secretary to Major John William Elliott Maikai, the adjutant general of the army, promoted to major and assigned to the personal staff of Kamehameha IV when the king ascended to the throne in 1855, promoted to the rank of colonel in 1858; In 1856, Kalākaua was appointed a member of the Privy Council of State by Kamehameha IV; also appointed to the House of Nobles, the upper body of the Legislature of the Kingdom of Hawaii, 1858-1873; served as 3rd Chief Clerk of the Department of the Interior in 1859-1863; appointed Postmaster General, 1863-1865; appointed the King's Chamberlain, 1865-1869; elected King, 1874; helped negotiate the Reciprocity Treaty of 1875 between the US and Hawaii; Kalākaua's reign is generally regarded as the first Hawaiian Renaissance, for both his influence on Hawaii's music, and for other contributions he made to reinvigorate Hawaiian culture
