Margaret Eloise Knight; February 14, 1838, York, Maine – October 12, 1914, Framingham, MA; moved to Manchester, NH as a child; left school early to work at a cotton Mill and after seeing someone stabbed by a shuttle she invented a safety device; moved to Springfield, MA, and hired by Columbia Paper Bag Company, in 1868, Knight invented a machine that folded and glued paper to form the flat-bottomed brown paper bags, awarded patent, 1871
