Members of the Greely Expedition ... Second Lieutenant James B. Lockwood; Born: October 9, 1852; Died: April 9, 1884 of starvation at Camp Clay; James Lockwood became second in command of the expedition shortly after arriving at Lady Franklin Bay. He participated in several exploratory excursions, and he and Brainard led the mission to reach "Farthest North" on May 13, 1882. Greely considered Lockwood "cheerful and considerate."
