Spellings, Margaret, 1957-
<p>Margaret Spellings was born in Houston in 1958 and earned her B.A. from the University of Houston. After serving as the associate executive director of the Texas Association of School Boards, she ran a select committee on education for Texas Governor William P. Clements. Spellings then served George W. Bush in 1994 as political director in his first successful gubernatorial campaign. From 1994 to 2000, she was a senior adviser to Governor George W. Bush and oversaw education reform in Texas. In 2001, Margaret Spellings became assistant to the President for domestic policy.</p>
<p>In November 2004 President Bush nominated Spellings to succeed Rod Paige as Secretary of Education and she was confirmed in early 2005.</p>

<p>Margaret M. LaMontagne Spellings (née Dudar; born November 30, 1957) is an education administrator and American politician. She served as United States Secretary of Education from 2005 to 2009. Spellings was the President of the University of North Carolina, overseeing the seventeen campus system from March 1, 2016 until March 1, 2019. In 2019, she became CEO and President of Texas 2036.</p>
<p>Spellings worked in several positions under George W. Bush during his tenure as Governor of Texas and President of the United States. She was one of the principal proponents of the 2001 No Child Left Behind Act that aimed at reforming primary and secondary education. She served as Secretary of Education in Bush's administration from 2005 to 2009, during which time she convened the Commission on the Future of Higher Education to recommend reform at the post-secondary level.</p>
<p>Margaret M. Dudar was born on November 30, 1957 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and moved with her family to Houston when she was in the third grade. She graduated from Sharpstown High School in 1975.</p>
