Brehm, Marie Caroline, 1859-1926
Marie Caroline Brehm June 30, 1859 - January 21, 1926; first legally qualified female candidate to run for the vice-presidency of the United States, which she did in 1924 on the ticket of the Prohibition Party running with Herman P. Faris; Brehm was a suffragette as well as being very active in promoting the temperance movement through her work for the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) beginning in 1891. In 1913, United States President Woodrow Wilson appointed her as a delegate to the World Anti-Alcohol Congress in Milan, Italy. She also served as Superintendent of Franchise of the national WCTU and California State Superintendent of WCTU Institutes. She had also served as the first vice-president of the Woman’s Legislative Council of California. She was a member of the National Party.
Brehm died as the result of injuries sustained from the collapse of a grandstand on New Year's Day, the sixth victim to die

Marie C. Brehm had an unusual legal name. It was “Suffragette Marie Caroline Brehm.” She was born in 1859 in Ohio. Later she moved to Wheaton, Illinois; joined the Woman’ Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) in 1891, In 1895, she became recording secretary of the Illinois WCTU; In 1901, Marie C. Brehm was elected president of the Illinois WCTU. In 1906, she began working for the Board of Temperance of the Presbyterian Church; She appointed by President Taft as delegate to the Twelfth International Congress Against Alcoholism. It was at the Hague in the Netherlands in 1909; ave the address on temperance at the World’s Sunday School Convention. That was at Zurich, Switzerland in 1913. President Wilson appointed her delegate to represent the US at the Fourteenth International Congress Against Alcoholism in Milan, Italy; vice-president of the Woman’s Legislative Council of California. She was a member of the new National Party; chair of the National Prohibition Party Convention of 1920; an unsuccessfully as a state senator in California in 1920. In 1924 she was the Prohibition Party candidate for vice-president of the US
