Lee born August 14, 1952, in Viroqua, Wisconsin; Lee is an Eagle Scout; attended the United States Air Force Academy, where he received a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering in 1974; pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base; served at Kadena Air Base; studied for a master of science degree in mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; assigned to Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts; Hill Air Force Base; selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in May 1984; missions on STS-30, STS-47, STS-64, STS-82; retired from NASA in 2001
