Cornelius "Neily" Vanderbilt III (b. September 5, 1873, New York City, NY–d. March 1, 1942, Miami Beach, FL); parents wereCornelius Vanderbilt II and Alice Claypoole Gwynne, he married Grace Graham Wilson, the youngest child of New York banker Richard Thornton Wilson, Sr. and Melissa Clementine Johnston, 1896, 2 chilren: Cornelius IV (1898–1974) and Grace; BA, Yale University, 1895; disinherited by father after marriage; involved in improving train cars; commissioned a second lieutenant in the 12th Infantry Regiment of the New York National Guard, 1901, promoted to first lietenant, 1902, promoted to captain, 1907, liteutenant colonel 1912, corlonel ,1917; commander of 22nd Engineer Regiment of the New York National Guard during WWI, promoted to brigadier general, 1918
