SCOTT, Job (1751-1793); Job Scott of Providence, Rhode Island, came to Europe in 1793 of religious visit, and died in Ireland, at the house of Elizabeth Shackleton at Ballitore. His Journal was first published in 1797 and his Works in 1831. Extracts from his writings have appeared, edited by John E. Southall in 1911 and by Henry W. Wilbur in 1912, etc... b. Oct. 18, 1751 at Providence, R.I., son of John and Lydia Scott; After some years of folly and dissipation he was awakened; was inclined to the beliefs of the Baptists. Taught school for a while. 1774 spoke as a minister; m. Eunice (d.1791) 6 children. He travelled widely in the ministry in North America and Elisha Kirk speaks of him as a "doctor of physic". 1792 sailed for England and Ireland on a journey in the ministry. Some have held that he was Unitarian in his views because like Elias Hicks he stressed the necessity of the work of Christ in the heart. But J.S. also acknowledged the redemption wrought by Christ on the Cross; d. Nov. 22, 1793 at Ballitore, Ireland of small-pox, aged 42 years.
