Gordon, George Angier, 1853-1929
Gordon, George Angier(1853–1929) Protestant clergyman, author; born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. An estate overseer's son, he worked several manual trades before emigrating to America in 1871. He graduated from Bangor Theological Seminary, then from Harvard (1881). From 1884 until his death he was pastor of Old South Church, Boston. His The Christ of Today (1895) expressed a liberal theological doctrine, and he became an important champion of religious freedom.

Brookline, Mass. Oct. 25 (A.P.) - The Rev. George A. Gordon, 76, senior minister, retired, of the Old South church, Boston, (Congregationalist), and one of the best known clergymen in the east, died at his home here early today after a stroke suffered last Friday.
He was an overseer of Harvard, 1897-16, president of the Harvard Alumni association, 1918, a member of the Memorial National Institute of Arts and Letters, the Massachusetts Historical society and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Science.
George Angier Gordon was born in Scotland, January 2, 1853, and educated there in the common schools. He came to the United States in 1871, was graduated from the Bangor Theological seminary, 1877, from Harvard college in '81. He was ordained in the Congregational ministry in '87, served at Temple, Me., 1877-78 and at Greenwich, Conn., 1881-3. He married Susan Huntington Manning in 1890.
Dr. Gordon wrote extensively on theological subjects. Yale, Bowdoin, Harvard, Brown, Columbia and Western Reserve were among the institutions which granted him honorary degrees.
