Anna L. Rose Hawkes, 88, president of the American Association of University Women from 1955 to 1963, died Thursday at The Green Home in Wellsboro, Pa., where she had lived since 1974.

Dr. Hawkes was dean of students at Mills College in Oakland, Calif., for 10 years. At the conclusion of her AAUW presidency, she became acting dean of students at Cottey College in Nevada, Mo., retiring in 1965.Dr. Hawkes was a presidential appointee to the U.S. delegation to the 1958 UNESCO general conference in U.S. Commission for UNESCO during 1963-65.

She served on the Advisory Council on Employment Security for the Labor Department, the national board of the YWCA and the board of trustees of Finch Junior College in New York.

She was a former president of the National Association of Deans of Women and secretary of the American College Personnel Association.

Dr. Hawkes was born in Mansfield, Pa. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from George Washington University and a doctorate from Teachers College of Columbia university. She was the widow of Dr. Herbert E. Hawkes, dean of Columbia College of Columbia University, with whom she wrote a book, "Through a Dean's Open Door." She also published other books and articles.
