Schuyler, James Marcus 1923-1991
James Schuyler was born 9 November 1923 in Chicago, Illinois the son of Marcus James (a reporter) and Margaret (Connor) Schuyler. He attended Bethany College (1941-1943) and the University of Florence (1947-1948). Schuyler was on the staff of the Museum of Modern Art from 1955-1961 (New York, NY) and an art critic at Art News. A poet, novelist, and playwright, Schuyler was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for The Morning of the Poem. He was also
the recipient of the Longview Foundation award (1961), Frank O'Hara Prize (1969), National Endowment for the Arts grants (1971, 1972), National Institute of Arts and Letters award (1976), Guggenheim fellowship (1981), Academy of American Poets fellowship (1983), Whiting Award (1985) and the Lambda Literary Award (1994).
James Schuyler died following a stroke on 12 April 1991, in New York, New York.

His family lived for a time in Downer's Grove, a suburb of Chicago, then Washington, D.C., and later Chevy Chase, Maryland.
