Simon Greenleaf was born on December 5, 1783 in Newburyport, Massachusetts ; attended the Latin School from 1790-1799 ; entered apprenticeship in Ezekiel Whitman's Gloucester, Maine law office in 1801 ; admitted to Cumberland County, Maine Bar in June 1801 ; married Hannah Kingman September 18, 1806 ; practiced law in Gray, Maine from 1807-1817 ; moved law practice to Portland, Maine in 1818 ; served as a Reporter for the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine from 1820-1832 ; published book Cases, Overruled in 1821 ; appointed to Royall Professorship of law by Harvard Law School in 1833 ; published book A Treatis on the Law of Evidence in 1842 ; appointed Dane Professor of Law bt Harvard Law School in 1845 ; resigned from teaching in 1848 ; declined appointment as judge to the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts in 1849 ; died on October 6, 1853 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
