Lindley, Daniel, 1801-1880
Daniel Lindley ; born August 24, 1801 ; died September 3, 1880 ; was an American missionary to South Africa. Married to Lucy Lindley 1834 ; the Lindleys founded the Inanda Seminary School in 1869. Son of the founder of Ohio University ; studied at Ohio University and at the Union Seminary in Prince Edward, Virginia ; was ordained by the Presbyterian Church. Sent by the American Board of Missions to South Africa ; first posted in Matabeleland ; in 1842, led the founding congregation of the first Dutch Reformed Church ; in 1847, established a station at Inanda. Lindley family, including their eleven children, moved to the Inanda Mission in 1858 ; Lucy and Daniel Lindley retired in 1873 to Morristown, New Jersey.
