Rupertus, W. H. (William Henry), 1889-1945
William Henry Rupertus (November 14, 1889 – March 25, 1945) was a major general in the United States Marine Corps and the author of the Rifleman's Creed.

William Henry Rupertus was born November 14, 1889, in Washington, D.C. He received his commission in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1913, and served with the American Legation in Peking from 1929 to 1933, and then with the Fourth U.S. Marines in Shanghai, China in 1937 and 1938. He commanded the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C. from 1938 to 1940, advancing to the rank of brigadier general in January 1942, then major general in July 1943. From July 1943 to November 1944, he commanded the First U.S. Marine Division, the served as commandant of the Marine Corps Schools from November 1944 until his death on March 25, 1945.
