p. 382-389. The testimony of the Monthly Meeting of Philadelphia concerning our beloved friend John Pemberton, deceased. Son of Israel and Rachel Pemberton; born in this city the 27th 11th month 1727; on reaching his majority, went to England for business on the same ship as John Churchman and William Brown; accompanied John Churchman on religious visits through England, Ireland, and Holland; first spoke in public testimony at Penzance in Cornwall; returned to Philadelphia in 1754 and spent some time as a merchant before deciding to devote himself to religious matters; accompanied Daniel Stanton on religious visits around Philadelphia from 1757 to 1760; married Hannah Zane, daughter of Isaac and Sarah Zane, in 1766; exiled to Virginia for seven months during the Revolutionary War on account of his pacifism; set out for a religious visit to Europe with William Matthews in December 1782; captured by a French privateer on the way there but was soon released and made it to England; traveled through Ireland with Thomas Cash; walked through the streets of Londonderry in sack-cloth, accompanied by James Christie, and exhorted the inhabitants to repent; returned to England in 1785, and after attending yearly meeting in London traveled through Western England, Scotland, and the Orkneys for about two years, before returning to London; left London for Philadelphia in 1789; returned to Europe in 1794, traveling to Amsterdam, Westphalia, Ufelen, Bielefield, Lemgo, Barrenstrop, and Pyrmont, Germany, where he died of illness on 1795-01-31 and was buried 1795-02-03.

PEMBERTON, John, 1727-1795. Of the three Pemberton brothers, James was the politician, Israel, the merchant prince and John, the preacher. His was a life devoted to religious service. When visiting in Scotland he found the poor mostly subsisting on fish. He therefotearranged that a shipload of grain should be sent. In Ireland he distributed about £1000 to the poor. At his death he left a sum or piece of real estate for the care of Friends' horses at the time ofYearly Meeting in Philadelphia.
