Wanneh, Gawaso, 1881-1955
Arthur C. Parker ; born in 1881 on the Cattaraugus Reservation of the Seneca Nation of New York ; son of Frederick Ely Parker and Geneva Hortenese Griswold ; adopted into the tribe as honorary member in 1903 ; given Seneca name Gawaso Wanneh (meaning "Big Snowsnake") ; grandson of Seneca leader Nicholson Henry Parker; lived on grandfather's farm ; influenced by Seneca culture and Christian missionary culture ; field archaeologist at the Peabody Museum in 1903 ; ethnologist at the New York State Library from 1904-1906 ; collected cultural data on the New York Iroquois ; first archaeologist at the New York State Museum in 1906 ; founded the Society of American Indians in 1911 ; editor of the society's American Indian Magazine from 1915-1920 ; awarded the Cornplanter Medal in 1916 ; became director of the Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences in 1925 ; directed the WPA-funded Indian Arts Project during 1930s and Great Depression ; elected the first President of the Society for American Archaeology in 1935, helped found the National Congress of American Indians in 1944 ; retited from Rochester Museum in 1946 ; died in Naples, New York on January 1, 1955.
