Harry Wade Hicks was interested in the outdoors and especially in winter recreation. He worked as secretary of the Lake Placid Club, a resort in Lake Placid, New York, founded by Melvil Dewey. Hicks was instrumental in securing the 1932 Winter Olympics for Lake Placid.
