Biographical note: George M. Chescheir, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, joined the First Kentucky Infantry of the National Guard in 1911. His unit served along the Mexican-American border in 1916. The unit was federalized as the 138th Field Artillery and embarked for France in 1918, but the Armistice was signed prior to any engagement. Between the world wars Chescheir was involved in the guard's restoration of order following coal field riots in the early 1930s, and relief work during the Louisville flood of 1937. In World War II, he served as a colonel commanding a prisoner-of-war camp at Fort Benning, Georgia.
