Biographical History Hugh T. Carlisle (1843-?) was born in New York in 1843. On September 19, 1861, Carlisle joined the United States Army at the age of 18, serving as a Private in Captains Fyler's Company D 81st Regiment, in the Ohio Infantry. He served the Union Army from 1861 through April 22, 1863. During his military service he fought in the historic Battle of Shiloh, which took place in Southwestern Tennessee.
