William Davies enlisted as a private in the 12th New York Volunteer Regiment of Cavalry, Company A. He first travelled to Camp Washington (Staten Island), New York, and was later mustered in with the rest of his company on November 19, 1862. In May of 1863, Davies was detached to the 18th Corps which was stationed on the coast of North Carolina. It is believed he died in a skirmish around New Bern, North Carolina.
