Education: Attended high school in Boston, 1946-50; studied piano, College of Music, Boston University, 1950-51; studied photography, with Benjamin Chin and Alfred W. Richter, at California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, 1956, and with Minor White, at Rochester Institute of Technology, New York, 1957-58. Military Service: Served as photographer in the United States Army, 1953-55. Family: Married Eleanor Morris in 1964; son: John Paul. Career: Worked as apprentice in commercial photographic studio, Boston, 1952; freelance photographer since 1955, resident in Santa Fe, New Mexico, since 1973. Photo-Research Consultant, Polaroid Corporation, Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1960. Teaching Assistant, with Minor White, Summer Photographic Workshops, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, 1959; Visiting Instructor in Photography, at numerous colleges and workshops throughout the United States, including Boston University, 1960, St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York, 1966-71, New York University, 1967-70, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, 1970-73, and Maine Photographic Workshop, 1972, 1979-81 and 1984-85. Founder-Member, Association of Heliographers, New York, 1963. Recipient: First Prize for Photography, 10th Boston Arts Festival, 1961; Guggenheim Fellowship, 1966, 1975; National Endowment for the Arts Photography Fellowship, 1971, 1974; Art Directors Club of New York Award, 1974; National Endowment for the Arts Grant, 1975 and 1982; Arts Council of Great Britain Grant, 1978; Peer Award, Friends of Photography, Carmel, California, 1983; Annual Governor's Award, New Mexico, 1984.
