Richard T. Greene was born in Charleston, South Carolina on July 18, 1913. After graduating from Hampton Institute with a degree in business administration, Greene worked at Citizen's & Southern Bank and Trust Company in Philadelphia then served during World War II. Later, he worked as a national advertising representative and business manager with Associated Publishers, Inc. and Interstate United Newspapers, two New York City companies that managed advertising for black-owned newspapers nationwide.
In 1960, Joseph Davis, the founder and president of Carver Federal Savings Bank, hired Greene as his executive assistant. Greene rose quickly through the ranks; within eight years, he was the bank's president, chief executive officer, and director. As Carver's chief official, Greene concerned himself primarily with the economic and social development of the communities which the bank served.
