Williams, R. S. (Robert Statham), 1859-1945.

Robert Statham Williams (1859-1945) was a bryologist and botanical explorer. He served the New York Botanical Garden as Museum Aide (1899), Assistant Curator (1906), Administrative Assistant (1910) and Research Assistant in Bryology (1932). He worked closely with Elizabeth Britton. He was born on May 6, 1859 in Minneapolis, Minn. At the age of 20 he moved to Montana where he became a businessman, miner and explorer. In 1898-1899 he explored Alaska and Yukon Territory, creating the first extensive collections made by a resident naturalist. He brought his collections to the New York Botanical Garden. Working with the NYBG he collected in Bolivia and Peru (1901), Philippines (1903) and Panama (1908). In 1909 Williams was sent to Hurstpierpoint, England to supervise the packing and shipping of the William Mitten Herbarium. His fortunes turned with the Great Depression of the 1930's and his health declined. He returned to Minneapolis where he died on March 13, 1945.
