Carruthers, Jeanne V. (Jeanne Victor Hugo), 1904-
Jeanne Victor Hugo married Lyman Bruce Carruthers, a surgeon, and was posted with him by the Board of Foreign Missions, Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., to Miraj Hospital Centre in western India where they remained until 1954. Dr. Carruthers worked as a surgeon, hospital administrator, and dean of the medical school. Jeanne Carruthers visited patients and organized social activities for students and hospital staff. In 1953 she took charge of the school's audiovisual program. Dr. Carruthers' failing health forced their retirement in 1954. When he died in 1957, Jeanne Carruthers resumed missionary work, serving as secretary for the Fine Arts of the Commission on Ecumenical Mission and Relations of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., and also of the Division of Overseas Ministries of the National Council of Churches. In 1961 she become the first secretary of the UPCUSA's newly created Office of Fine Arts. In the 1960s she produced a number of dramas at the Barn Playhouse at the church-owned Conference Center in Stony Point, N.Y. In 1971 she volunteered for work in Mexico where she co-founded, with Oscar Rodriquez, the International Christian Center for the Arts. In 1977 she returned to the U.S. to live in Duarte, Calif., where she assisted with the establishment of the first International Christian Center for the Arts in the United States, headquartered at Pasadena Presbyterian Church.
