Clark, Edward, 1906-1992

Edward Aubrey Clark (1906-1992) earned his law degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1928. In 1937, Mr. Ed, as friends knew him, attained the position as Texas’ Secretary of State. After leaving office, he began a law firm, which eventually became Clark, Thomas, Winters, and Newton, and served as legal counsel for future President Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1948 contested win to the U.S. Senate. Clark continued a working relationship with Johnson, who appointed him Ambassador to Australia, 1965-1967. Afterwards Mr. Ed remained involved in politics, supporting John G. Tower’s 1972 bid for the Senate, working on the General Advisory Committee of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency for President Nixon, and serving on a nonpartisan steering committee to reelect President Reagan in 1984.
