Hagood, Johnson, 1873-1948
U.S. Army officer. Born in Orangeburg, S.C., he graduated from West Point in 1896 and saw service in Europe during World War I. He was promoted to Major General in 1925. After a political controversy in 1936, Hagood was relieved of command of the Eighth Corps by President Roosevelt and soon afterward retired; in congressional testimony (solicited in confidence but then publicized) he called WPA funds "stage money" and suggested that they would be better used for improvements to army housing. He authored a number of books and magazine articles.
