Vedder, David, 1790-1854

David Vedder was born in Orkney, Scotland, and home schooled; orphaned at twelve, he went to sea, first as a cabin boy, later as captain of a whaler and first officer of an armed cruiser. He became a tide supervisor for various ports in Scotland. Vedder began writing poetry at an early age, and published individual poems and collections of verse throughout his life. He also contributed articles to numerous periodicals, and wrote several books, notably a version of Reynard the Fox, as well as founding the Edinburgh Literary Gazette in 1830.
