Dobie, Dudley R., 1904-1982
The cousin of J. Frank Dobie, Dudley Richard Dobie, Sr. (1904-1982) was born to ranchers William Neville and Mary E. (Mills) Dobie in Lagarto, Texas. In 1927, he graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College, now Texas State University-San Marcos (TSU) and married Deborah Galbreath, with whom he had three children. A writer on Texas history for numerous magazines and newspapers, Dobie received his master’s degree in history from the University of Texas at Austin in 1932. Three years later, he became a bookseller, helping the Texas State Historical Association establish its annual conference book auction in 1940. Dobie served as history professor and museum director at TSU from 1941 to 1951 and a city alderman for San Marcos from 1949 to 1951. After his bookstores in Austin and San Marcos failed, Dobie taught history and directed the Big Bend Memorial Museum at Sul Ross State Teachers College in Alpine from 1955 until his retirement in 1966. A member of the Hays County Historical Commission, he authored A History of San Marcos and Hays County (1948) and Adventures in the Canyons, Mountains and Desert Country of the Big Bend of Texas and Mexico (1952).
