Charles C. Craig, the son of Amos Craig and a descendant of Scots-Irish immigrant Alexander Craig, was born in New Hampshire around 1840 and worked as a blacksmith in Quincy, New Hampshire, near the town of Rumney. He also ran a general store, where he sold fresh and dry foods, tobacco, hardware, and footwear. From around 1885 to 1932, the store also housed a post office.
