George L. Brooks was born at Bedford, Massachusetts, on September 27, 1848. In 1881 he moved to New Mexico on the recommendation of his New York City physicians. He was a businessman involved in real estate, insurance, and livestock sales. During the 1890s he served as Livestock Agent for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad; also as General Manager for the Blanchard Meat and Supply Co.
