Sallie Nixon was born in Henderson, N.C. She and her husband Caldwell Nixon moved to Nebraska from North Carolina in 1967. After taking a class from poet Ted Kooser, Nixon was inspired to attend the University of Nebraska in 1969. Following her studies, Nixon returned to North Carolina.
