Born to Wyman and Mattie Burrows Windham in Nacogdoches, Texas, James M. Windham, Sr. (1917-1998), graduated from the University of Texas in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. The following year he enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served in the Pacific Theater. During the war he married Woermann Gibson, with whom he had two children.
