Farmer and soldier; son of John Brown, the abolitionist; b. at Hudson, Ohio; moved with brother Owen Brown to Osawatomie, Kan., 1855 where was elected a member of the legislature; led group of militia to the relief of Lawrence, Kan., after it had been "sacked" by a pro-slavery force; served with the Kansas Brigade during the Civil War but was forced to resign because of illness; did not participate in the Harper's Ferry raid; in 1862 purchased a ten-acre plot on the south shore of South Bass Island at Put-in-Bay, Ohio where he farmed, taught science and mathematics, and lectured on temperance and slavery, remaining there until his death.
