He was born on June 30, 1858, in Byron, Minnesota, the son of Ira Sully Whitcomb (1826-1899) and Cynthia Woodin Whitcomb (1828-1918). Ira had one son from his first marriage, Lee Whitcomb, and a daughter from his second marriage, Susie A. Whitcomb. His second wife was Alice S. Pierce, whom he married in Monmouth, Oregon.
