Cliffton, William, 1772-1799

William Cliffton was an American poet, best known for his satirical verse. Cliffton was born in Philadelphia to Quaker parents, and poor health restricted his movements to such an extent that he seldom if ever left the city. He developed talents in music and verse, and became known for his political satires. After his premature death, several notebooks of lyric poetry were found and published. Several of his poems were set to music.
