McGillivray was probably born at Fort Toulouse, Elmore Co., Ala., to Lachlan and Sehoy McGillivray. He was educated at Charleston, S.C. In 1784, known as the emperor of the Creeks and Seminoles, he negotiated the treaty with Spain at Pensacola, Fla. He visited Pres. George Washington at N.Y., N.Y., and was appointed agent of the U.S., with the rank of brigadier-general. Soon thereafter the King of Spain appointed him superintendent general of the Creek nation.
