Lemuel Pomeroy had considerable investments in textile mills in the Pittsfield area. Simon N. Dexter was a merchant, banker, Erie Canal commissioner and cotton and wool manufacturer. The Oriskany Manufacturing Co. was originally known as the Oriskany Manufacturing Society.
