Butler King Couper, Jr. was born on 1 January 1906 in Spartanburg, South Carolina and was the son of Butler King Couper (1851-1913) and Emma Josephine Sibley (1867-1957). Couper served in the naval reserve during World War II, and remained active in the United States Navy until his retirement in 1972. Couper was also a noted oceanographer and made one of the deepest dives to the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.
