Born at Sulzburg in Baden, Germany on Nov. 19, 1825, Herman Kiefer was the son of Conrad Kiefer, a physician, and Henrietta Schweychert. Herman Kiefer attended school at Freiberg, Mannheim and Carlsruhe before going to the University of Freiburg and Heidelburg. He also studied at Prague and Vienna. Fleeing from Germany in 1849 after taking part in the revolution, Kiefer came to the United States. He opened an office in Detroit on Oct. 19, 1849.
