Chester W. Nimitz was born in 1885 in Fredericksburg, TX and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1905. He graduated from the Naval War College in 1923. He was CIC Pacific Fleet and CIC Pacific Ocean Areas during World War II. He served as CNO, 1945-1947 when he retired.
