J.D Love was born in Riverton, Wyoming. He graduated from the University of Wyoming with a B.A. and an M.A. in geology. He earned a PhD. from Yale. While he was at the University of Wyoming he worked for the State Geological Survey under the direction of Sam Knight. He was a field geologist who did original work on the geology of Wyoming.
