After Isherwood dropped out of Cambridge University in 1925, he became the private secretary to the French violinist AndreĢ Mangeot. Mangeot's son, Sylvain, the manuscript's illustrator, would become the Diplomatic Editor for the Reuters News Agency and the author of The Adventures of a Manchurian: The Story of Lobsang Thondup (Collins, 1974).
