John A. Gilmore, resident of Mercer Co., Ill. Union soldier of the 9 Illinois Volunteer Regt. Company "E." The regiment fought in Tennessee, Mississippi, taking part in the Battle of Shiloh, advance on Corinth, Grant's Central Mississippi campaign, and Sherman's March to the Sea. His brothers Robert N., Ezra, and Edwin served in Co. "K" of the 102 Illinois Infantry Regiment. His father Ephraim Gilmore was aid-de-camp to Gen. Eleazar A. Paine.
